I take it this discussion is referring to the kings in the book of Revelation, chapter 17. First of all, the Roman Catholic popes are never referred to in any Bible prophecy. to be continued
[Editor's Note: Are they not? Please see Amazing Facts Lessons
Revelation 13:2 And the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
The beast--which has a mark that we must avoid--obtained its power, authority, and capital city from the dragon. According to Revelation 12:3-5, the dragon is the power that sought to destroy the child Jesus at the time of His birth. It was Satan who inspired Herod, a king for the pagan Roman empire, to slay all the male babies in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:13, 16). To whom did pagan Rome give her authority and capital city? History is clear that pagan Rome turned over its power and capital city to the church of Rome. The following historical quote is typical: "The Roman church ... pushed itself into the place of the Roman World-Empire, of which it is the actual continuation. ... The Pope, who calls himself 'King' and 'Pontifex Maximus,' is Caesar's successor."* ...
*Adolph Harnack, What Is Christianity? (New York: Putnam, second edition, revised, 1901), p. 270.
Revelation 13:18 His number is six hundred threescore and six.
In Revelation 13:18, God says to count the number of the beast's name and that it is the number of a man. When we think of the papacy, the man we naturally think of is the pope. What is his name? One of the pope's official titles is "Vicar of the Son of God," which is "Vicarius Filii Dei" in Latin (the official language of the church). Newspaper articles, when referring to the pope as "Vicar of Christ," will often enclose the words in quotation marks to show that they are a translation of his title, or name. The book of Revelation is saying that the Roman numeral value of the letters of his name will equal 666.

Red beard brings up a lot of good points that I haven't thought of before in terms of the 8 kings. Some deep scholars spurn this theory of the post 1929 popes as not being consistent with two or three witnesses since no other text in detail refers to the popes. These scholars apply the 8 kings to Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome-pagan, Rome-papal pre-1798, the United States, then Papal Rome, post 1929, fully restored to world dominance (yet future) and then the reign of Satan himself as the 8th. There are variations of these 8 kings as noted in the note just before Redbeards.
I think the 8 post 1929 popes may need a good look, but "time" reference is a problem, in that the perspective is the 1844 investigative judgment--the "is" power at that time would have been the United States and not the 1929 restored Papacy. Anyway these are all speculative at best.

In response to your request for discussion on your article my comment is that the 7 kings cannot be the 7 post 1929 popes because verse 10 states that five are fallen. I take this to mean that they are in the past as one is(#6) and one is to come (#7). I believe this is referring to world empires that have oppressed Israel. I would submit the the 7 kings/empires are:
1 Egypt
2 Assyria
3 Babylon
4 Medo-Persia
5 Greece
6 Rome
7 Ottoman Empire or Third Reich
8 Anti-Christ's empire

And here is the mind which hath wisdom
I've been studying two things that have been interesting me as of late. One is the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, which i believe represents the 1888 message, Christ our Righteousness, because the tabernacle would be us and Jesus inside us (2Corinth.5:17). The other is Revelation 17, when it is discussing the seven kings. I believe those kings to be the post 1929 popes. 1929 was when Benitto Mussolini made the Vatican into a soveriegn nation, thereby every pope since would also be the head (king)of that nation. I started studying this when Pope John Paul II was pope, and realized he was the sixth king. This makes Pope Benedict XVI the seventh, and according to Revelation 17:10, he will be but for a short space (KJV), or a "little while" (NIV,NASB). According to James (which has the other listing of "short space", it talks about the 3 1/2 years of drought during Elijah's time. And Jesus would state to his disciples that He would only be with them but a little while (His ministry being only 3 1/2 years on this earth). If the calculations are true, then Pope Benedict will only be pope for 3 1/2 years, and the Beast will make his appearance as an Angel of Light around Christmas 2008. I find this curious, and would like your thoughts. Please, I am not being judgemental on anyones religion, but believe that all who truly accept Christ as their savior will be saved. God Bless one and all.
